Rochester is the centre of a busy irrigation and dryland farming district with the town itself supporting a population of some 2,600 people. Situated 177 km north of Melbourne, the town of Rochester is surrounded by dairy farms and is home to the Murray Goulburn dairy processing plant - one of the largest in Australia. The area, which is serviced by the Waranga Mallee irrigation channel, is also known for its tomato growing industry, grain cropping and livestock raising. Many other industries, supporting a range of agriculture in the area, thrive in the township, with flow on effects for the general population.
